The Carnival of the Fountains in Vigo di Fassa: Ladin Magic and Tradition

The Ancient “Carnascèr” and Traditional Masks amongst the Village’s Fountains

The Carnival of the Fountains (Carnascèr) in Vigo di Fassa (San Giovanni di Fassa) is one of the most authentic and evocative folklore events in the Dolomites.

Unlike traditional carnivals held in town squares, this historical, itinerant re-enactment transforms the ancient stone fountains of Vigo’s hamlets into natural stages where historic Ladin masked processions are performed.

The Protagonists of the Ladin Carnival: Bufón, Laché and Marascons

During the event, the village comes to life thanks to the symbolic figures of Ladin tradition, whose faces are concealed by the famous faciares (traditional wooden masks hand-carved by local craftsmen):

The Ivesperat (or Bufón): The irreverent and ironic figure who teases the crowd with jokes and riddles, characterised by a long conical hat adorned with coloured ribbons.

The Laché: The elegant leader of the procession, dressed in flamboyant attire, who leads the way with rhythmic dance steps.

The Marascons: Imposing figures wearing heavy cowbells (ciaviei) tied around their waists, whose rhythmic sound serves to awaken nature and drive away the spirits of winter.

Why is the Carnival Celebrated at the Fountains?

Historically, the fountains served as the meeting place and hub of social life for each neighbourhood (vicio) in the village. During Carnival, the procession makes its way from fountain to fountain to perform short, improvised theatrical sketches (mascherades), strictly in the Ladin language, bringing to life stories, legends and glimpses of Alpine life from the past.
